DETROIT – Families fighting to stay in their homes will gather at Wayne State Law School to speak out against illegal property tax assessments being used to force people from their homes in the City of Detroit. The families and their supporters will call on Mayor Mike Duggan and Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree to immediately stop home foreclosures and stop over-assessing properties in violation of the Michigan Constitution. Attendees from the Women’s Convention being held in Detroit will also be present.
About 100,000 working families, mostly African-Americans, have lost their homes to tax foreclosure, which has devastated Detroit neighborhoods, and run directly counter to the Mayor’s promise to increase Detroit’s population.
Families facing foreclosure have invited Mayor Duggan, Treasurer Sabree, and Sen. Coleman Young, Jr., to hear stories of the fear, anger, and anxiety caused by illegally inflated property taxes. The event is free and open to the public.
