LANSING, MI — Today, the Gretchen Whitmer for Governor campaign released the following statement after the Macomb County Republican Party announced Stephen Bannon would keynote their annual event.

“Michiganders deserve a leader who’s in their corner, fighting for families to get good-paying jobs and for our kids to get the education they deserve, not the Donald Trump-Stephen Bannon agenda that would raise the cost of health care for hardworking Americans and give tax breaks to billionaires on the backs of working families,” said Whitmer for Governor Communications Director Annie Ellison. “Trump, Bannon, and Bill Schuette have put special interests ahead of peoples’ lives and the successes of Michigan’s families. That’s why Whitmer is mobilizing people in every corner of this state to take on our toughest challenges so that we can grow our economy, prepare our kids to succeed, and make government accountable.”

As Senate Democratic Leader, Whitmer led the fight against attacks on workers, women, families, and seniors, and has taken on both parties to do what’s right. Whitmer brokered the deal as the top Democrat in the Michigan legislature to expand Medicaid to 630,000 people through Healthy Michigan.
When Governor Snyder and Lansing politicians tried to pass “right to work” legislation without any public hearings – even going so far as locking the doors of the Capitol – Whitmer threw open the doors and led the protest from her office so people could have their voices heard. She fought back against Republican efforts to require separate insurance for women who are raped by sharing her own story of surviving assault for the first time on the floor of the legislature.
As Ingham County Prosecutor, Whitmer cleaned up an office rocked by scandal and implemented tougher ethics standards and greater transparency, even requesting the Michigan State Police investigate the integrity of the county’s evidence room.
